Lorem Ipsum is the standard dummy text of the printing and design world. It is scrambled Latin taken from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a philosophical work Cicero wrote in 45 BC, and it has been used as placeholder copy since at least the 1500s. Typesetters adopted it because it looks like real language, with natural word lengths and sentence rhythm, but nobody can get distracted by reading it.

That is still why designers, developers and marketers use Lorem Ipsum text today: it shows how a layout behaves with realistic copy before the final content exists, while making it obvious that the words are temporary. The classic opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit...", is instantly recognised as filler, so it rarely ends up published by mistake.

Choose HTML to get each paragraph wrapped in <p> tags and lists in <ul> or <ol>. When to use placeholder text, and when not to

Lorem Ipsum is great for early wireframes, component libraries and testing layouts with long and short content. It is less useful when the words themselves shape the design, such as headlines, calls to action and navigation labels. Use real draft copy there as early as you can.

Before launch, search your templates and pages for "lorem" so no placeholder text gets indexed by search engines. Thin or placeholder content on a live page can hurt how search engines assess the quality of a site. Lorem Ipsum alternatives and variations

Lorem Ipsum is the default, but it is not the only option. Some teams prefer placeholder text in the language of the final site, because word lengths and line breaks differ a lot between languages; German has long compound words, while Thai and Japanese have no spaces between words. If your site will be translated, test layouts with real sample text in each language as well.

Other variations include randomly generated English, themed "ipsum" generators for fun, and content-first design, where writers produce draft copy before the layout is finished. For production-like testing of components, generate edge cases on purpose: an extremely long word with no spaces, a single-word headline, a 300-character product name and an empty field. The character count option is ideal for this, because it gives you text of an exact length every time.
